What Is The Definition Of A Work-Related Police Injury?

The Denver Police Department’s Operations Manual defines a work-related injury as “any injury or occupational disease/illness that Risk Management, or the Office of Administrative Courts, has determined arose out of the course and scope of the performance of an employee’s duties as a police officer.”

This procedures manual uses the terms “work-related” and “line-of-duty” injuries interchangeably. Our correctional officer injury lawyers can help you determine the scope of your case, and relentlessly fight for your claim.

If I Am Injured In The Line Of Duty, What Am I Entitled To As A Denver Police Officer?

According to the collective bargaining agreement between the City and County of Denver and the Denver Police Protective Association (DPPA), officers can receive up to 2,080 hours of paid leave at full salary for the rank they were currently employed. This will be processed from the regular police payroll and distributed like a normal salary.

Procedure For Police Workers’ Compensation Benefits

To begin receiving workers’ compensation benefits for injuries sustained due to work, police officers or their supervisors typically call the City and County of Denver’s OUCH Line at 303-436-6824. The OUCH Line will allow a qualified medical professional to assess the officer’s injury.

For injuries needing immediate medical attention (as in life-threatening injury), the OUCH Line notification can be made by the injured person as soon as they are able.

After the call is made, the supervisor of the injured officer will need to make a report of the accident or incident within five days of being notified of the injury. Then, the Risk Management Unit will assess the case for liability to determine if the injury is work-related.

If the officer’s injuries are designated to be related to their job duties, they will receive the benefits as designated by the collective bargaining agreement.

What If The Risk Management Unit Denies My Denver Police Workers’ Compensation Claim?

You can appeal their decision if your workers’ compensation claim is denied. At this point, we strongly encourage all Denver officers experiencing this to hire a workers’ compensation lawyer in Denver like those at Eley Law Firm. There’s no guarantee that all the medical expenses a police officer could face coming out of their work injury will be paid by the department.
